It’s a bright sunny morning and you’re out and about in the great outdoors, brimming with excitement at what the day might have in store for you. Spirits are high and you’re truly enjoying yourself until lo and behold, you discover something that’s not exactly the hidden forest trails or picturesque views that you expected to find; instead, it’s your period popping in to say hello.

That time of the month has just announced its arrival, not making our lives easier in the least and I’m sure my fellow women travelers can relate hard, amirite girls? Or whether you’re non-binary, trans or genderqueer, every individual who bleeds can relate to the stress that comes with it when you’re on the move and away from the comfort of home. We’re only too acquainted with issues like finding hygienic spaces, dealing with period cramps and the constant anxiety of spotting and checking for leaks.

Now what if I told you that there existed one way to bid goodbye to all these worries for good? Yes, I’m talking about the menstrual cup, a product that is in my opinion absolutely revolutionary. I made the switch from sanitary pads to the cup in Jan 2017 and never looked back. What inspired me to do this? It was an article I came across on social media by a young woman who wasn’t afraid to try something new, no matter how unconventional. And by writing this, I hope in some part I can do for you what she did for me.

While I’m sure a lot of you must be familiar with the cup, for those who find themselves new to this, don’t worry I got you covered. This read entails everything you need to know about the cup from A to Z. To begin with, menstrual cups are made of soft medical grade silicon, safe rubber in simple terms. It’s an environment-friendly alternative to sanitary napkins and tampons as it can be reused for years.

You have to insert it in your vagina where it can stay for hours and collect all the blood hassle-free. A common doubt that you may have is if you can pee and poop with the cup inside you and the answer to that is of course you can! The cup sits neatly inside the vagina, without disturbing any of your other functions. Every 6-12 hours you have to remove and empty the cup, depending on your flow and reinsert it.

Pull it out, pour the blood, and reinsert. It’s that simple. Now I understand that not everyone is comfortable with the idea of inserting a foreign object into one’s body, and that’s quite reasonable. Most of us were introduced to pads at a very young age, sometimes even before we got our first period. Growing up without any means to an alternative, we remain unaware that choices do exist. Lacking the exposure, we tend to stick to the familiar. But it’s the age of the internet folks! I am frankly shocked that the awareness around menstrual cups is so low, despite the fact that its advantages over other period products widely outweigh the almost negligible downside. You have access to all the information in the world, so don’t take my word for it.

Why should you switch?

I love everything about the cup. EVERYTHING. Needless to say, I could go on and on about how amazing it is but I’ll try my best to keep this short.

Environment Friendly:

You already know that menstrual cups are reusable, they can be reused for anywhere between 5-10 years! Try and compare that with the regular use of sanitary pads and imagine the sheer amount of waste that gets generated. On top of that, sanitary napkins contain plastic, and add to the plastic pollution crisis the world is facing currently. Once you throw that used pad in the bin, you forget about it.

But it stays in the environment for hundreds of years. Having been presented with an eco-friendly, sustainable alternative, wouldn’t you take it? As co-habitants of the Earth, we all have a responsibility to the planet and if you think about it, implementing this one little change in your life can have a huge impact in the long term.

Health and Safety:

You must have seen sanitary napkin ads boast about their capabilities to absorb longer, lock away the moisture, being leakage-free, etc. I find this ironic now, because this is exactly what pads don’t do. The blood stays in our panties for hours, rotting away. And unfortunately, smells. A lot. The gel used in sanitary pads that apparently lock the wetness in fact contain chemicals, so while there is absorption of blood by the pad on one hand, what you may not know is there’s also the reverse absorption of chemicals happening simultaneously as a result of the body staying in contact with it for hours.

Tampons soak up the walls of the vagina and pose the danger of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a potentially fatal disease. Unlike both these products, there’s the cup. Its made of medical grade silicone that doesn’t react with the vaginal walls and nor does it absorb blood. It simply collects it inside our bodies in a clean and hygienic manner, reducing the risk of infections and/or rashes that come with the use of pads and tampons. Research suggests that the use of menstrual cups helps in reducing cramps and in general the pain and discomfort caused during periods. This is because the cup creates a suction when placed inside which is also how it attaches itself to the vaginal walls.

Many women with PCOD and PCOS conditions have recommended the use of the cup, having observed several positive effects.

Once the cup is locked in position in the vaginal canal, it won’t move up or down on its own and neither can you feel it inside you. This makes it the perfect period companion for sports, adventure and all things travel! This is honestly the thing I like most about the cup. The tight seal formed by the cup on insertion is what makes it hard to get dislodged and also water tight, making it absolutely leak-proof. You can go about a wide-range of activities, completely worry-free, be it swimming, horse riding, cycling, yoga or even mountain climbing.

Its freedom, in a cup. The cup is tiny, it can literally fit in the palm of your hand. This quality makes it extremely easy to carry anywhere, especially on your trips. You can get a small pouch to keep it in and you’re good to go!

Comfort and Convenience:

Since it is designed to rest comfortably inside your body, there is no feeling of dampness or stickiness at all. No dryness, irritation, odour or rashes whatsoever. The process of insertion and removal is entirely painless and a mess-free experience. At first, mastering the technique may seem daunting, but don’t lose heart. With a little bit of patience and a couple of YouTube tutorials, you’ll definitely figure it out. It certainly helps to have a fair knowledge of the female anatomy, and if you don’t that’s totally okay and you can maybe try to insert a finger inside to become familiar with your vagina and gain a more precise understanding of your body.

You may also use it before or after your period is over (for light flow) without any causes for irritation or discomfort. Inserting it in before your period even starts or around the time you expect it to so that you don’t have to worry about it if you have a trek planned later for instance. A great way to avoid those unwanted surprises if you ask me! Disposal becomes a non-issue as well.

My experience with the cup

As much as I’d like to say that that it was a completely smooth sailing process for me, that isn’t exactly true and I want to be as honest as I possibly can so that you know you’re not alone in the newness of it all. I have been where you are. When you try to insert the cup for the first time, you might get it in one go, or struggle a bit like I did. What’s important is that you don’t give up. Keep attempting until you get it right. And you will. The new is always challenging but you’ll become a pro in no time. It took me almost a month to finally fit the cup in there. I don’t want to dishearten you, but yes, it was hard. And I was really close to calling it quits.

But then I discovered a new kind of fold and upon trying it, I managed to insert it in one straight go! That was definitely an eureka moment for me, the sense of victory sweeping all over me. There’s no correct way to insert the cup, what works for one may not work for another. I’d suggest that you experiment with the different types of folds to figure out which one is for you. These folds are extremely simple and easy to learn with a quick google search. Once the cup is fully inside you, you’ll feel it open up and slowly stick to the walls of your vagina. The tip of the cup should be right above the vaginal opening. Be careful not to push it too far in as that will make it harder for you to remove it.

In order to remove the cup you can use two or three fingers to reach its sides and pinch it. This will break the airtight seal and fold the cup after which you can pull it out. Give yourself time to get used to the feeling of the cup. I found it really uncomfortable in the beginning and was super aware of it all times, scared of what might happen. Now it feels so normal that I sometimes forget it’s even in there! You might feel the need to keep checking on it, or removing it immediately after insertion. That’s completely normal. Patience is key here. It took me 2-3 cycles with the cup to get entirely comfortable with its every aspect so hang in there!

Time to bust some myths!

1). What if it gets stuck inside?

It is literally impossible for the cup to get stuck inside. However, the worst that can happen is that you push it too far up inside to reach. If this happens, do not panic because the cervix won’t let it go any further than your vagina and it cannot get lost in there. Simply squatting and flexing your pelvic muscles to push the cup back down should do the trick.

 

2). Can I still use it if I’m a virgin?
Yes, of course you can. Using the cup has nothing to do with your virginity or sexual activity. Remember, the vagina is a flexible muscle after all. The experience is the same for all, virgin or not. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from trying the cup with this reason.

 

3). But its so small, will I have to empty it multiple times a day?
No! That’s the best part. The cup may look tiny, yet its super efficient at its job. I for one don’t find the need to empty my cup more than once a day. Obviously, this differs according to the intensity of each person’s flow. You’d be surprised to see how little we actually bleed, contrary to what pads make us feel.

 

4). Will I have to remove it every time I pee or poop?
No not at all. In case you didn’t know, there are three holes down there and each serves it’s own function. You can easily pee or poop with the cup inside you.

 

5). Does the stalky end hang outside the body?
A lot of menstrual cups have a small stalk at the tip to ease locating it and removal. But it completely fits inside the body and no part of the cup protrudes in any manner.

Speaking, beaches around India have only fascinated me since my youth. Additionally, since both of us had only decided upon seeing someplace, that wouldn't be crowded quite a standard criteria for honeymooners!. Precisely the same time are exotic enough to be remembered for life. We reluctantly agreed upon travelling to Kovalam and researching the exquisite splendour of this Alleppey backwaters. While I've heard some folks say that shores are the same everywhere, I felt it isn't so in Kerala. And why don't you? Bound from the exotic Arabian Sea on its southern side, using its enormous coastline extending around 600 km, we may safely state the small country of Kerala homes some of the most magnificent beaches of India, or instead, of this planet!

Discussing the beaches, I do not personally understand why the Kerala beaches have taken a backseat when Indian tourists are involved. Along with the beauty of the majority of Kerala, beaches is how most of these are tremendously scenic sites while simultaneously being silent and calm, less infested with the seasonal audience. In each of the three times we spent at the Kerala beaches such as Kovalam, we only celebrated their tranquillity, seclusion, and virgin beauty, and shared a few of the very divine minutes. We saw the little, quaint community fishing villages, a few previous piers that extend into the sea, lagoons, vast lakes, and many freshwater ponds.

In the Kovalam beach, we appreciated the sight of a little village down the coast, the beautiful Lighthouse coast. In the Shankhamugam shore on the flip side, we were lucky to encounter one of the most magnificent sunset views amidst the scenic surroundings of a popular haunt of sunset watchers. Another intriguing coast, the Thirumullavaram Beach, was an ideal morning escape. We began our afternoon taking a look at the swaying coconut palm trees, and seeing local fishers who put out to the sea seeking their catch! Best honeymoon places in Kerala.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

On the flip side, we're becoming awed by the sparkling beauty of all of the shores. Although on the flip side, relishing utter awareness of delight taking a look at the comparison between the blue colours of this water and the skies! There was a sting of heaven everywhere around us, which was becoming more serene with all the nectar of our candy togetherness!

Our insecurities from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple: Like I had heard and read some fantastic stories about the hoary temple convention in the Southern State of Kerala, we were quite determined that our trip would be incomplete without visiting at least a few of those. Moreover, like the majority of the recently married Hindu brides, I also had any sentimental leanings towards supplying prayers and puja' into the Lords for our lives, our potential, and our protracted togetherness! I could still clearly remember the day we paid a brief visit to the beautiful Padmanabhaswamy temple, even when we were only fascinated with its distinctive temple architecture along with the silent serenity within the massive temple borders!

The afternoon started with our utter wonder in researching the mythical structure of this Padmanabhaswamy temple and the calm setting of divinity inside. Among the most magnificent and most ancient temples of Kerala, it's been vibrant with heritage, having been around for many years with the music and arts. The temple's most awe-inspiring sight has been its shrine, showcasing an imposing image of Vishnu from the Anantasayanam position; a picture which we saw through three doors before the shrine.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon, and also the massive gathering in the front of the shrine was sufficient to inform us of the spiritual fervour of those folks there! But beyond the utter spiritual pursuits of individuals, we're becoming more awed by the Dravidian style of this temple structure, its 100 feet high Gopuram also constructed in early Dravidian style and its glorious mural paintings and rock carvings. To me personally, the temple was intriguing, to say the least, despite its rigorous worship protocols, highlighting entirely about the sanctity, ease, and also a prevailing naturalism that indicated the sin of Lord Padmanabhaswamy.

The travel to the Gorgeous Alleppey backwaters

The afternoon was the 6th December dawn forced a promising one after temple's usual calmness. We had hardly any time at our disposal at Tiruvanandapuram, the temple, as we needed to place out for another great travel, a night in a sweet, scenic houseboat, exploring the beautiful splendour of this Alleppey backwaters currently called Alappuzha Backwaters. Along with the bunch of exquisite little islands in the area. We'd already reserved a one-night cruise onto a houseboat that will let's explore the wonder of Alappuzha, and we'd spend the night at the quiet tranquillity of the backwaters. The idea was so intimate when we had been hoping to get to the coastal township of Alleppey. We did not even see our driver got confused with all the leadership, and we were becoming quite late compared to our scheduled time!

Never had I seen a heavenly sight everywhere! Visitors All over the World have called the Alappuzha since the Venice of the East. Appreciating the incredibly intimate dusk with all the view of this enchanting backwaters as well as the raindrops that had made the atmosphere more from the world, we stepped within our little, cosy houseboat for our backwater ride after dusk. Sailing across the Kettuvallam houseboat throughout the enchanting backwaters of Alappuzha has been the adventure of life.

Honeymoon places in Kerala. The following day, early sunrise, the rain cooled down, and we can see the crystal clear blue skies, which meant we can now begin sailing through the backwaters again. You will find such fishing nets of the regional fishermen, the flock of ducks swimming across the banks and small birds flying across the sky, smelling profoundly of their vibrant life from the countryside of their bewitching Kuttinad!

Late in the noon, we decided to experience the bunch of small islands on the Vembanad Lake, which can be very much part of the Kuttanad region. We have been advised the ideal way to observe the birds of the Kumarakom sanctuary is a boat excursion. But we did not have sufficient time for the boat trip but researched to our complete the lush greenery of a few islands and the tranquil beauty of the Vembanad lake which juts to the mainland at a succession of lagoons and streams.

It was the final evening of our excursion and with kisses flowing with the utter bliss of the environment in addition to using the sorrow of parting ways with Kerala. It was intriguing to discover our hotel also adorned the natural backwaters! The final night of the stay from the scenic honeymoon harbour we had selected for ourselves. To make the night unforgettable, and to bask in the luxury of tranquillity. We stayed awake until the wee hours of the night, maybe not in our area, but outdoors, seeing the magnificent beauty of the backwaters nestled undauntedly from the fingers and coconut trees appreciated from a point just beyond the hotel!

As little children sitting in the lap of Mother's nature, we had our toes drifting in the seas and had to pay a small price for this. Among my pair of ornaments abruptly disappeared in the waters, and after a time, we knew that it was futile searching for this. As we laughed it off, our giggling and 'sweet nothings' disappeared to the atmosphere and mingled with all the mysterious allure of the configurations of the gorgeous Kumarkon! Now remaining a few thousand miles away in my nation, I wistfully crave for its character as well as the enthusiasm of the couple of days spent at the lavish exploration of nature's miracles in Kerala, the God's own country! Some day, until we perish, we'd like to relive those idyllic days! Until then.

Nisarga Cyclone hits Lonavala Rajmachi VIllage

Nisarga Cyclone has hit Udhewadi Village, Rajmachi, and left a destructive impact. Twenty three out of the twenty-five houses have suffered losses. Roofs were blown away, home structure damaged, solar panel light systems destroyed, food ration got damaged. Udhewadi Village is reachable by dirt road famous for offroading and trekking.

Rajmachi Village is almost home to many trekkers and considered the favorite place for hikers. People are welcoming, and the food is fantastic. The location offers different views throughout the year. Cyclone Nisarga impact felt throughout Lonavala, Karjat, Mulshi area. Many houses at Rajmachi damaged beyond repairs.

The road leading to the village is damaged and difficult to navigate with many trees fallen on it. Many houses are damaged, furniture, and electronic appliances. Walls of the house have fallen. The village had one well-made house all the villagers took refuge in that house as trees were falling around their homes. Locals did try to save what they could, but the size of the storm was way too large to handle. It is necessary to help them soon before the monsoon begins so they can survive the monsoon season.

Novel coronavirus started in Wuhan city, China, in late 2019 and has spread in almost the whole world. As we all know, the transmission is rapid, and no treatment found to be effective; the only option left with us is social distancing. Covid19 may cause mild to severe symptoms depending majorly on the immunity of an individual and the co-morbid conditions. We, trekkers, are no doubt fit and healthy, but to avoid getting infected are forced to be away from the mountains and trails.

Although we got quarantined for our safety at home, we are not used to being at home on weekends. We miss being in the mountains, trailing through the paths leading us to the peak to witness the magnificent views.

We are all waiting for the lockdown to end soon, but it should also be safe for us to move around fearlessly. Most of us are ready for the treks that we want to do, let's go through a list of places that newbies and advanced trekkers can enjoy to the fullest. As the world awaits cure for COVID-19, here's a list of trek post coronavirus lockdown you can embark on once the lockdown gets terminated.

Kedarkantha Trek | Treks and Trails India

Kedarkantha is a mountain peak of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. Kedarkantha trek base village is Sankri, which has the entrance to the sanctuary. Its an 8 hours drive through the beautiful roads of Uttarakhand. After completion of the halfway tour, mystic and dense pine forests are visible. Kedarkantha elevation is 12,500 feet—Kedarkantha, located within Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarkashi district. Kedarkantha trek meeting point is Dehradun from where the road journey begins to Sankri. 

The stay at Sankri helps us acclimate us for the low temperature we will be facing in the next few days. Early morning, we start the trek after taking permission from the wildlife sanctuary and ascend. There are mules available on a rental basis for those who do not wish to carry thier luggage along. As we ascend, we come across a few snowy areas, and the excitement peaks high. The trek progresses through a thick forest and divine nature. 

The stay arranged in share tents. the trek extends for four days until a return trip to Sankri. As we ascend higher, the temperature drops down; in winter, the temperature at night falls below zero. the trek day to the summit starts midnight around 2.30 or 3 am such that we witness the sunrise at the summit. as its one of the famous and most natural trek in the Himalayas, it has well-defined routes available now. It becomes easy for beginners to walk. 

Walking on snow requires proper shoes and microspikes, which prevents slippage on the snow and helps in getting a good grip on snow. It will be helpful to have a trekking pole. the path till the peak is an extensive one, so we need to be hydrated along with instant energy bars. the zenith is majestic with a 360 view of many known peaks of the Himalayas. The return journey filled with many never to forget memories of a lifetime.

Kalsubai Trek | Trek post Coronavirus lockdown

Kalsubai is situated in Maharashtra, having the highest peak height of 1646 meters 5400 feet. The base village is Bari; the nearest railway station is Kasara. From Kasara, roadways help to reach the base village from where the trek begins. Its trekking difficulty is moderate to hard level and requires average endurance. In the post-monsoon period, the region witnesses a dramatic makeover with flowers of different colours and varieties blossoming along the landscape. These flowers attract a hoard of butterflies, bees, dragon-flies, and other insects to feed upon the precious nectar. Kalsubai Trek, there are well-designated trekking routes markers. An experienced trekker takes about two and a half hours to climb up on this route.

Kothaligad Fort Trek

Kothaligad Fort is a small Fort 3100 feet situated in Karjat, Maharashtra. It is one of the famous treks, because of its low height and easy climbing. It is also known as the Fort of Peth because of its vicinity to Peth village at its base. There are a small temple and a large cave at the bottom. A spiral staircase is built inside the fort to reach the top. The starting point for Kothaligad trek is Ambivili village. The nearest railway station is Karjat. From Karjat station, public road transports taken to reach till Ambivili village. Ambivili linked to Peth via a dirt road. From Ambivili, it is a 5.7-kilometre ascent to Kothaligad fort. From Peth village, it is a steep 1.5 kilometres climb to the base of Kothaligad fort. You gain 180 meters of vertical elevation in this 1.5-kilometre climb. The trail is rocky, narrow, and usually covered with trickling water during the monsoon. The whole idea of camping and hiking outdoors is to get away from the bustling city and reconnect with nature. That is why you must limit what comfort items you bring with you when you camp. Limit comfort items include your gadgets like tablets, phones, cameras, and other sources of entertainment like books or comic books.
